   Résumé
   Duke Curtis rêve de devenir le chef de la bande des Pythons Royaux et croit qu'il lui faut, pour ce faire, un revolver. Duke a à peine quinze ans. Il sait que l'ancien chef, Priest, pourra lui trouver l'arme. La bande s'installe chez Littleman, un adolescent abandonné par son père, et paie le loyer avec les recettes d'une jeune prostituée, Lou-Anne. Littleman est tué par une bande rivale, les Loups. Les Pythons vont le venger, en tuant le chef des Loups. Duke cherche à rentrer chez sa mère, mais se fait cueillir par la police qui l'embarque sans ménagement.
   Commentaire
   Véritable «welcome to the jungle» que ce film de la cinéaste indépendante Shirley Clarke. La première œuvre à montrer sans complaisance ce qu'était devenu Harlem. Bien qu'elle soit issue du milieu de la danse, et que son film repose sur une musique de jazz, Shirley Clarke ne cherche jamais à imiter West Side Story. Proche de plusieurs cinéastes expérimentaux qui se regroupaient autour de la revue new-yorkaise Film Culture, elle signe une mise en scène qui ne fait de cadeau à personne, et évite le piège des bons sentiments.
